Welcome
to the Royal Cambridge Home
The Royal Cambridge Home was
founded in 1851 in memory of the 1st Duke of Cambridge, the seventh
son of George III and grandfather of Queen Mary. He had noticed that
whilst veteran soldiers could retire to The Royal Hospital Chelsea,
their widows had no equivalent place. Queen Victoria became its Patron
and the Royal title was conferred in 1867. Members of the Royal Family
have continued to be Patrons, notably Queen Mary and now our present
Queen. Strong links with the Royal Hospital Chelsea continue to this
day, with its Governor always being the Chairman of this charitable
institution.
Our residents
Originally the Home supported only the widows of NCO's and private soldiers who had served in the British Army. However, today we are open to ALL the Armed Forces of the Crown (namely regular, territorial or reserve units of the British Army, Royal Navy and Royal Air Force).
Those who meet our criteria include:
|
Women who have served in the Armed Forces of the Crown |
|
Women who have been dependent on a man or woman who has served in the Armed Forces, which includes:
| |
spouse, civil partner, widow, former spouse, former civil partner, parent, child, step child, adopted child, and qualifying co-habitant. |
|
|
Nursing Sisters and other female staff of the Nursing Yeomanry. |
|
Wives of In-Pensioners of the Royal
Hospital Chelsea. |
The Home also offers Respite Care.
Location
The Home is located in East Molesey, Surrey very close to Hampton Court
Palace and the River Thames. The river
is only a few minutes walk away, as is the local High Street with its
variety of small shops and pleasant village atmosphere.
